DP - In a nod toward the environment, CU will begin offering “lightweight aluminum” cups to fans during the 2019 football season at Folsom Field. CU’s athletic department, which debuted a first-of-its-kind Division I sustainability program in 2008, will be the first in the nation to offer such cups to fans at a collegiate venue, according to a CU-Boulder news release. The cups were designed in partnership with Ball Corporation, and will be available for the first time when the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ visit Saturday for the Buffs’ home opener. In a move that parallels with the environmentally friendly atmosphere of Boulder, Colorado, Folsom Field is debuting their new lightweight aluminum cups this Saturday when the Buffs take on Nebraska. These aluminum cups will take the place of their plastic predecessor but will currently only be offered for beer purchases (expect the transition for soda and wine products to come sooner than later). CU, and Boulder in general, has always been an incredibly environmentally conscious place and so this move should not come as a surprise to anyone. If anything, it came kind of late. However, I am a little suspect at the timing of the roll out of these new "lightweight" (wink, wink) aluminum cups. Nebraska and Colorado was a pretty intense rivalry in the 1990s and 2000s and was filled with horror stories of opposing fans who dared to show up to their rivals home stadium. I know Rick George went on a long rant today preaching civility between fan bases this Saturday but maybe that was all lip service? Maybe the arming of drunk fans with aluminum cups is exactly what this rivalry needs? A battle royale of tens of thousands of drunk CU and Nebraska fans can give this rivalry the shot of adrenaline it needs to get back to the good old days. Decades from now fans will refer to this game as the "Cup Game". Sure maybe it'll be a black eye for the sport and maybe a few hundred people will have to be rushed to the hospital, but wouldn't it be worth it to see this rivalry return to what it once was? On a more serious note, I've always thought the horror stories from opposing fans attending away games seemed a bit overblown and they always tended to come from a 3rd or 4th party source. "My cousin's roommate's best friend's brother made the drive from Lincoln to Boulder in the late 90s. When they left the stadium, they found that their car and been completely torched! Nothing but ashes we left all because the car had Nebraska plates! Can you believe how hostile and violent CU fans are!?!?!?" Don't get me wrong, back in the day I'm sure some bad things have happened to both Nebraska and CU fans alike. I just think those days are long gone and Saturday is going to come and go with little to no incident. #IdRatherBeDeadThanRed #GoBuffs
