Even Peter King gave his two cents...
Nolan Arenado is getting a lot of heat today for not running out the final out in the AL's 4-2 victory over the NL in the All-Star Game. I can totally see where the anger comes from too. Ted Williams would have ran out that ball, same with Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gerhig and Abraham Lincoln. Nolan's lack of effort was the most un-american thing 90% of baseball-twitter has ever seen. While it is almost impossible to argue with Purple Row's theory, we're gonna try.
Bunny Slope found two major reasons why Nolan did what he did, and all the flyovers who don't watch Colorado sports missed them both. 1. The Rockies are on a mission this year. Not sure if you've noticed or not, but this is the year of Mission82W, ever heard of it? There is no way that Nolan is going to go balls down the line when an 82 win season is still a (unlikely) possibility. Nolan is the ultimate team player, the dude bleeds purple. He's not going to risk pulling a hammy when there is this much on the line heading into the 2nd half of the season. 2. The Giants and Dodgers are both contenders for the NL pennant this year. There is no love lost in NL West rivalries, especially when they involve the Rockies. If the NL won the All-Star game then they would get home field advantage in the World Series. You think Nolan is just going to willingly give either the Giants or the Dodgers that big of an advantage? Ha.. Ha... HAHAHAHA. Arenado knew the situation he was in. He knew a double play would give the AL the victory and in doing so would make the challenge for a World Series title for either the Giants or the Dodgers that much harder. It's the long con, wake up people.
